Hvac Unit Freezing
Why is My HVAC Unit Freezing Up?

HVAC units freezing up is a common issue we see as an HVAC company.  The problem does need to be addressed sooner than later as allowing it to fester can result in costly air conditioner repair and, in extreme cases, AC replacement.  There are a number of reasons why HVAC units freeze up. Let’s take a closer look at the most common problems we, as a certified HVAC company, have seen:

  • Problems with air flow across the evaporator coil can cause the unit to freeze up. When we perform your AC service, we check and rinse your evaporator coil.  If you have not had your HVAC unit serviced in a while, you may need to consult a professional HVAC company such as BlueSky Cooling Comfort to come out and inspect your evaporator coil.
  • Running your air conditioner when it is cold outside can also cause the HVAC to freeze up. If it is below 60 degrees outside, turn the AC off.
  • Another common cause is the unit being low on refrigerant. A certified HVAC company can check the refrigerant charge, add refrigerant and inspect for leaks.
  • Mechanical problems can also cause the HVAC to freeze up. In this case, air conditioner repair services are needed.  If the unit is damaged beyond repair, then AC replacement may become necessary.

Unfortunately, not all HVAC dealers will give you an honest assessment of your problem.  At BlueSky Cooling Comfort, we strive to solve your issue through air conditioner repair vs. costly AC replacement whenever possible.  If your HVAC unit is freezing up, give us a call today.  If you’ve already consulted another HVAC company or other HVAC dealers, we are happy to offer a second opinion.
